After the police encounter in which the four accused in the 27-year-old Hyderabad veterinarian's gangrape and murder case were shot dead, Chief Justice of India Sharad Arvind Bobde said, "Justice loses its character if it becomes revenge." Police has said that the four were killed in self-defence as they pelted stones and fired at the personnel after snatching pistols.

Chief Justice of India Sharad Arvind Bobde on Saturday said justice loses its character if it becomes a revenge, news agency ANI reported.

The Chief Justice’s comments come a day after all the four accused in the rape and murder of a 26-year-old veterinarian last week in Telangana last week were killed in an encounter with the police.

“Recent events in country have sparked off the old debate with new vigour. There is no doubt that criminal justice system must reconsider its position and attitude towards laxity and eventual time it takes to dispose of criminal matters,” CJI Bobde was quoted as saying by ANI.

“I don’t think justice can ever be or ought to be instant. And justice must never ever take the form of revenge. I believe justice loses its character of justice if it becomes a revenge,” Justice Bobde said in Rajasthan.
