NEW DELHI: The protesting farmers on Thursday called off their year-long protest after the Centre sent them an official letter accepting most of their demands.

The farmers were on a sit-in protest since last November against the three farm laws, which have since been repealed by the government.

The farmers will vacate the Delhi borders and return home from December 11. They will take out victory marches to their respective places.

Announcing the end of agitation, leaders of Samayukta Kisan Morcha said they will hold a review meeting on January 15 to see the progress on the promises made by the Centre.

"We have decided to suspend our agitation. We will hold a review meeting on Jan 15. If govt doesn't fulfill its promises, we could resume our agitation," farmer leader Gurnam Singh Charuni said.

The decision to call off the protest was taken today in the meeting of the farmers union after the government promised to form a committee on MSP and withdraw all cases against the farmers immediately.

The Centre's letter, on the letterhead of the agriculture secretary, also said that the governments of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana have given in-principle consent to giving compensation to the kin of farmers who lost their lives.

The farmer leaders apologized for the inconvenience caused to people due to their agitation.

On November 19, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a surprise announcement that the Centre will repeal the farm laws.

The Farm Laws Repeal Bill was passed by both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on November 29, the first day of the winter session of Parliament. President Ram Nath Kovind has also given his assent to the Bill thus completing the process of repealing the three farm laws.
