The government has once again clarified its opinion on the cases of alleged marital rape that often arise in the country. On this issue, Union Minister Smriti Irani made an important statement on Wednesday.

'It is not right to call all men rapists'

During the discussion on the Union Budget 2022 presented in Parliament, Smriti Irani said that sexual violence in married life cannot be supported but it is also not right to call all men rapists under its guise. He said that it is not right to condemn every marriage in the country.

'Help being given to needy women'

In fact, CPI MP Binoy Vishwam had asked a question on 'Sexual Violence in Married Life' during the budget session. Responding to this question, Smriti Irani said that at present there are more than 30 helplines working across India to help in matters related to women. More than 66 lakh women were assisted through these helplines.

He said that 703 'One Stop Centers' are also working to help women in the country. Through these also help has been given to 5 lakh women. He told the CPI MP that the case of Marital Rape is under consideration in the Supreme Court. Therefore, the government cannot discuss much on this issue.

'Marital institution will be broken'

BJP leader Sushil Modi also participated in the discussion and said that if the government decides to keep marital rape as a crime, it will destroy the institution of marriage. He said that it would be difficult to prove when the wife agreed or not.

CPI MP clarified

Seeing the controversy rising over his question, CPI MP Binoy Vishwam said that he did not mean that every man is a rapist. He asked whether the government can collect data from the states on this issue and submit it to the Parliament at the earliest. On this, Union Minister Smriti Irani said that the Central Government cannot make any such recommendation to the State Governments in this House.
