Upendra Bhai Rathore, 40, a resident of Amreli in Gujarat, has been making tools for the farmers for the past 15 years according to their needs. He inherited this skill from his father. His father had a workshop and after passing 10th, he started helping him. He learned to understand the language of machines from his father.Upendra Bhai told The Better India, “Initially, I loved doing something or the other at Papa's workshop. Then when farmers would come and ask them to make some tools for their fields, I used to join them too. That's just how we started and then we went on to do so many different things."
However, Upendra Bhai got an opportunity to channelize his skills after coming in contact with Honey Bee Network. In fact, in the year 1994, Mansukh Bhai Jagani of Gujarat invented Bullet Santi. He tried to make a small tractor for the farmers using bullet motorcycle which was very successful.Upendra Bhai made the Bullet Santi a little more advanced and gave it the form of Sanedo Tractor. This is a three wheeler tractor which is very helpful for the farmers, especially small farmers. Upendra Bhai tells that there is a demand for this tractor in India as well as in countries like Africa.
“Initially we used Bullet motorcycles only. But then when this bike was banned for a few days, we dropped the bullet from our model and went on with the other model. Our tractor is very famous among farmers today. Along with good quality, it is also easy to manage,” he said. With this you can easily do the work like plowing and sowing in the field. Also, it is not very expensive like the big brand tractors. Its price is between Rs 1 lakh 37 thousand to Rs 1 lakh 60 thousand.Upendra Bhai says that he has also been awarded with the Srishti Samman for this tractor. Along with this, Srishti has also taken it to the countries of Africa and Kenya by liaising with some universities and micro-enterprises. A team from Kenya also visited Upendra Bhai's workshop and saw his tractor in use. Today his three wheeler tractor is in demand in Africa as well.
“Apart from the tractor, we have done many other small and big innovations so that the farmers continue to be helped. Few days back, we once again got a chance to work on a machine from Srishti. In fact, they needed something so that the leaves could be easily removed from the sugarcane. This process takes a lot of time and sometimes the workers get hurt. So Srishti's team wanted us to create something that would solve this problem," he added.
Upendra Bhai, working on this, a few days back, made such a hand-operated device that can easily remove sugarcane leaves in minutes. The cost of this yantra will hardly be Rs 500. Regarding this, Chetan Patel, Project Manager, Srishti says, “Our aim is to help the farmer and laborer brothers. Such small machines make a lot of work easier so that farming can be made profitable and easy.”
Upendra Bhai has made good use of the lockdown to make this yantra. He says that it was prepared after one or two unsuccessful attempts. He also took a trial by going to a farmer cultivating sugarcane in a nearby village. The farmer's feedback for the first machine was that it was heavy. So Upendra bhai worked on it again and made the right instrument in the second time. It has now been sent to Srishti. Chetan Patel says that the product is currently in trial and he hopes that soon it will be made available to the farmers by making some minor changes in it.
“Thousands of mobile models have been made today in 20 years, but there has not been much development of hand-operated tools in the field. Our aim is to make people's attention towards this so that important inventions are made for the agriculture sector. People like Upendra bhai are fulfilling this responsibility very well. Hopefully this trend will continue like this going forward,” Chetan Patel said at the end.
