India-Bangladesh News: Diplomatic tensions between India and Bangladesh recently escalated when Bangladesh expressed displeasure over a statement by India's Home Minister Amit Shah. During an election rally in Jharkhand, Shah had expressed his resolve to selectively expel Rohingya and Bangladeshi infiltrators from the state. Bangladesh took this statement seriously and reacted strongly and handed over a protest letter to the Deputy High Commissioner of India.

Bangladesh's response

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh on September 23 lodged its objection to Amit Shah's statement by giving a formal letter to the Indian Deputy High Commissioner in Dhaka. In the letter, Bangladesh described this statement as objectionable and unacceptable. He said that such statements can weaken relations between two friendly countries and such comments are not expected from leaders holding such high positions. The Bangladesh Foreign Ministry clearly stated that such statements can negatively affect the mutual respect and strong relations between the two countries.

Amit Shah's statement

Amit Shah had said during a rally organized for the assembly elections in Sahibganj, Jharkhand that if the Bharatiya Janata Party government is formed in the state, Rohingya and Bangladeshi intruders will be selectively thrown out of the state. Shah further said that these intruders are damaging the civilization and property of the state and they will no longer find any place in Jharkhand. Describing this problem as serious, he said that if it continues, the number of intruders may increase in the next 25-30 years.

Disputes arose earlier too

This is not the first time that such controversies have surfaced between India and Bangladesh. Some time ago, allegations were also made against India regarding the national anthem in Bangladesh. A former Bangladeshi soldier had claimed that Bangladesh's national anthem "Amar Sonar Bangla" was imposed by India on the country during the 1971 war. However, the Bangladesh government rejected the demand to change the national anthem and clarified that the matter is part of their colonial past. AFM Khaled Hossain, the government's adviser on religious affairs, had then said that Bangladesh wanted to maintain strong ties with India.

Although relations between India and Bangladesh have historically been strong, recent events have led to some disagreements between the two countries. Bangladesh's trade and cultural exchanges with India have been significant, and the two countries have been cooperating on various issues.
