For the presidential election, the BJP has played a big political bet by deciding the name of tribal leader and former governor Draupadi Murmu. Murmu will be the first woman tribal president of the country after winning. With this, the BJP will give a direct message to about nine percent of the tribal community across the country. 47 seats in Lok Sabha and 487 seats in various assemblies are reserved for Scheduled Tribes (Adivasi). BJP can get the benefit of this bet in the Lok Sabha elections of 2024 and various assembly elections to be held before that.

About nine percent (about 100 million) of the country's population are tribal communities, which are considered politically very strong. The number of Lok Sabha seats reserved for this community may be 47, but its influence is seen in about 100 seats. Apart from this, the number of reserved seats in various assemblies is 487, but this community has a wide influence in many other assembly seats as well. The BJP had won 31 out of 47 seats reserved for tribals in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. He will try to increase this number further.

impact on assembly elections

Assembly elections are to be held in about a dozen states before the Lok Sabha elections. These include major states such as Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Gujarat, where the tribal community is dominant and the seats reserved for them also create considerable political differences. After giving the country the first woman tribal president, the BJP is expected to get more support from the tribal community. The number of seats reserved for tribals is 128 in the four states of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Gujarat. Of these, BJP currently has 37 seats. Last time the BJP suffered a setback in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan. In Gujarat also its seats were greatly reduced, although it was successful in forming the government.

First test in Gujarat

Firstly, assembly elections are to be held in Gujarat later this year. There is about 15 percent tribal population and the number of seats reserved for it is 27. In the 2012 elections, the BJP had won 11 seats, while in the 2017 elections, the party could get only nine.

Three important states before Lok Sabha elections

After this, in the states where elections will be held just before the Lok Sabha elections next year, the number of seats reserved for the tribal community in Madhya Pradesh is 47. The BJP had won only 16 seats in the 2018 elections, while the Congress managed to win 31 seats. One seat went to an independent. At the same time, 29 seats in Chhattisgarh are reserved for the tribal community. In the 2018 elections, the BJP got only three seats, while the Congress was successful in winning 25 seats. Ajit Jogi won from one seat. On the other hand, in Rajasthan's 25 seats reserved for Scheduled Tribes, the BJP could get nine seats, while the Congress was successful in winning 12 seats. Two seats each went to the account of BTP and independents.

Jharkhand and Odisha will also be affected

Jharkhand has a total of 81 seats among other major tribal-dominated states. In the last elections, the BJP could win only three of the 28 seats reserved for the tribal community, while the opposition got 25 seats. Of these, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha got 19 seats, Congress five and JVM one. The tribal community has a strong influence in Odisha (28) and Maharashtra (25) as well. The tribal community is politically empowered in most of the northeastern states. In such a situation, the decision of Murmu's name is a big political bet of the BJP. BJP is trying to make inroads in Odisha. With this bet, sooner or later there is also an advantage there.

Last time the benefit of Dalit bet was received

In the year 2017, BJP had nominated Ram Nath Kovind, who comes from the Dalit community, as its presidential candidate. After his victory, the BJP got a lot of success among the Dalit community. Especially in Uttar Pradesh, he got more support from this community. There the BSP has also had to be very disappointed. However, there can be many other reasons for this, but this is also believed to be one of them.
