New Delhi: Cold wave is likely to prevail in Delhi-NCR from Monday and the minimum temperature may drop to around three degrees Celsius. According to the Meteorological Department, there will be a cold wave in Delhi-NCR between January 16 and January 18. In Ayanagar and Ridge areas, the minimum temperature can remain around three degrees Celsius on Tuesday and Wednesday.

According to an IMD official, large parts of north and northwest India recorded below normal maximum and minimum temperatures for most of the days this month before a western disturbance brought respite from the cold. This drop in maximum and minimum temperatures was due to a dense fog layer over the Indo-Gangetic plains for the last 10 to 11 days and a large gap between two western disturbances, which brought in colder than normal winds from the snow-capped mountains. The official of the Meteorological Department said that there is a lot of moisture in the Indo-Gangetic plains due to the large number of water bodies and rivers in the region. Once the Western Disturbance retreats, cold northwesterly winds will start blowing towards the plains.

Severe cold in Punjab, Haryana

The outbreak of severe cold continued in many parts of Punjab and Haryana on Sunday as well. During this, Faridkot remained the coldest place in the region. According to the report of the Meteorological Department, the temperature in Faridkot of Punjab was recorded at minus one degree. Among other places in Punjab, Amritsar was in the grip of severe cold and recorded a minimum temperature of 1.6 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, in neighboring Haryana, Ambala recorded a minimum temperature of 5.6 degrees Celsius while Hisar recorded a minimum temperature of 4.3 degrees Celsius. Apart from this, minimum temperature of 4, 5.2, 4.7 and 1.8 degree Celsius was recorded in Narnaul, Rohtak, Bhiwani and Sirsa respectively.

Mercury in Rajasthan's Fatehpur -4.7 degree Celsius

Fatehpur and Churu remained the coldest places in Rajasthan. The temperature was recorded at -4.7 degree Celsius in Fatehpur and -2.7 degree Celsius in Churu. According to the Meteorological Department, there is an outbreak of severe cold wave at many places in West Rajasthan, due to which the minimum temperature has dropped significantly in Ajmer, Kota and Udaipur divisions. Chittorgarh recorded a minimum temperature of minus 1.4 degrees Celsius. On the other hand, the temperature was recorded at 0.5 degree Celsius in Sikar, 0.6 degree in Bhilwara, 1.2 degree in Bikaner, 1.6 degree in Pilani, 1.7 degree in Baran and 1.8 degree Celsius in Sangaria.

In all the important cities of Rajasthan, the minimum temperature was recorded below seven degrees on Sunday. State capital Jaipur recorded maximum and minimum temperature of 19.5 degree and 5.6 degree Celsius respectively.

Cold may return again in Jharkhand

In Jharkhand from Sunday night once again severe cold can knock. According to the Meteorological Department, due to the north-westerly winds coming from the north, a drop of three degrees Celsius can be recorded in the minimum temperature. Jharkhand is getting partial respite from the cold due to an increase of two to three degree Celsius in the minimum temperature since January 12 due to western disturbance in the Himalayan region. The temperature is likely to increase in Jharkhand from January 19, as a fresh Western Disturbance is likely to affect the Western Himalayan region from the night of January 18.

Schools will open tomorrow in many cities, time changed in Bihar

In many districts of Rajasthan, the mercury has gone below zero and in this season snow has been seen for the first time in the desert of Rajasthan. Due to the severe cold, Haryana and Chandigarh have extended the school holidays. Now the schools will open from 21 January. At the same time, schools in Ghaziabad, Lucknow and Noida are going to open from Monday. School timings in Bihar have been done from 9:30 in the morning.
