New Delhi : It has been decided in the Congress Working Committee meeting that elections for the party's president will be held on October 17. Rahul Gandhi resigned from the post of President after the defeat of Congress in the Lok Sabha elections in 2019. Since then, Sonia Gandhi has been heading the party as the interim president. Earlier, whenever the election was announced, there were reports that Rahul Gandhi does not want to be the president. However, now senior party leader Salman Khurshid has said that Rahul is the only and first choice of the party.

Khurshid also said that after his arrival from abroad, efforts would be made to persuade Gandhi to take over as the president. When asked whether Rahul Gandhi is the choice of party leaders, Khurshid said, "Frankly, according to anyone I have spoken to or whose opinion I have felt, he is the first and only (choice)". Huh.'

Khurshid, a permanent invitee to the Congress Working Committee, said, "There hasn't been much discussion...we have no clue whether he will accept our request or not." It was not possible to talk about it today as this meeting was only about the program and it was very difficult to do so as it was a hybrid meeting.

"When he comes back, I am sure we would like to celebrate him," Khurshid said. The former Union minister said party workers and leaders share the sentiment expressed by senior party leader and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, who on Saturday said that Rahul Gandhi would be persuaded to assume the post of Congress President. Because there is no one other than him in the party who has appeal all over India.

Khurshid said that all the party leaders and workers want to see Rahul Gandhi at the top post. The CWC meeting was chaired by Sonia Gandhi, who is abroad for treatment. Former party president Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were also with him.
