London's famous Tower Bridge got stuck in its open position for the second time in a year due to a technical failure on Monday, causing road traffic to attempt to cross the Thames.  The bridge that boats can cross by lifting the road it crosses stalled just before 2:45 p.m. (1345 GMT), a London police spokeswoman said.

Since 1976, the two bridge arms or bases have been driven by oil and electricity motors, which replace the original steam engines from the 19th century.  "Tower Bridge is currently stuck in an elevated position due to a technical problem," said a spokesman for the City of London Corporation, which owns the bridge.

"We are working on solving the problem as soon as possible."  It was the second time in a year that the bridge got stuck, in August 2020 it was closed for more than 24 hours when its supports got stuck in an open position.
