There were many speculations about the captaincy of T20. Earlier, the BCB president had revealed four candidates for the role. Among them were Shakib Al Hasan, Nurul Hasan Sohan, Liton Das and former captain Mahmudullah Riyadh. But Sohan and Liton were ruled out of the 2022 Asia Cup due to injury, so only two options were left and out of the two.

Cricket | The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Saturday announced its 17-man squad for the upcoming Asia Cup, starting August 27. The BCB has appointed Shakib Al Hasan as the captain of the team for the Asia Cup 2022, the T20 series against New Zealand and then the T20 World Cup to be held in Australia in October-November. Jalal Yunus, President of BCB Cricket Operations, said after the meeting, "Shakib Al Hasan is the captain of the team till the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup. He has admitted that he made a mistake (signing the deal with BetWinner News) and has said that he will not make any further mistakes."

The BCB first sought time from the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) as several players in the team were injured. After that, the board took the second time as several controversies had come to the fore regarding Shakib. Betting of all kinds is banned in Bangladesh. Shakib announced his partnership with Caribbean betting company BetWinner News on social media last week, after cricket administrators asked him the reason. All-rounder Shakib Al Hasan on Thursday decided to cancel his contract with betting website BetWinner following a warning from the BCB.

When Shakib became Bangladesh's T20I captain

Shakib had earlier captained the Bangladesh team for four T20I matches for the first time in 2009-10. For the second time, he captained the Bangladesh team from 2017 to 2019, in which Bangladesh won only seven out of 21 matches under his captaincy.
