Parliament Session: President Draupadi Murmu will address the joint sitting of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha at 11 am today in which she can put forward the priorities of the newly elected government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This will be Murmu's first address in a joint sitting of Parliament after the formation of the eighteenth Lok Sabha. The first session of the new Lok Sabha began last Monday and the 264th session of the Rajya Sabha will begin from June 27.

PM Modi will welcome the President

Murmu will reach Parliament House from Rashtrapati Bhavan with mounted bodyguards. Prime Minister Modi and the presiding officers of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha will welcome her at the Gaj Dwar of the Parliament House, from where she will be taken to the chamber of the lower house led by the traditional scepter 'Sengol'. According to Article 87 of the Constitution, it is necessary for the President to address a joint session of Parliament at the beginning of the session after each Lok Sabha election.

PM Modi will reply to the motion of thanks on this day

The President also addresses a joint sitting of both the Houses in the first session of Parliament every year. Through the President's address, the government outlines its programs and policies. This address also highlights the steps taken by the government in the past year and lays down priorities for the coming year. After Murmu's address, the ruling party will introduce a motion of thanks in both the Houses of Parliament on which the members will discuss. Prime Minister Modi may respond to the discussion on the motion of thanks on July 2 or 3.

The President may mention the policies of the government

It is believed that Murmu will mention the policies of the Modi government in the last 10 years in her address, which will include achievements in various fields like economy, defense, healthcare, education and social welfare. The opposition is preparing to corner the government on several issues like alleged irregularities in NEET-UG, cancellation of UGC-NET, terrorist attacks in Jammu and Kashmir, train accidents in the country and rising prices of essential commodities.

NDA has won 293 seats

In the recently held general election, the ruling BJP-led NDA retained power for the third consecutive time by winning 293 seats, although this number is much less than the expectations of the BJP as it was expecting more than 400 seats for the ruling alliance. The opposition has emerged strong in the election and the 'India' alliance won 234 seats, including 99 seats of the Congress which is almost double the 52 seats won in 2019.
