Manipur Violence: Congress MP from Manipur Angomcha Bimal Akoijam on Monday expressed concern in the Lok Sabha about the situation in the state. He accused the central government of ignoring this 'tragedy' and claimed that people like Mary Kom and Mirabai Chanu are being told that they and their state do not matter in this country. Participating in the discussion on the motion of thanks brought on the President's address, the Congress MP challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to break the 'silence' on this issue and the Bharatiya Janata Party to say that Manipur is a part of India and it cares about its people.

'More than 200 people have died in Manipur violence'

The MP from the 'Inner Manipur' Lok Sabha constituency said that if the Prime Minister and the BJP do this, he will believe that they have nationalism. Referring to the atmosphere of violence prevailing in Manipur for a year, Akoijam said, 'We have to realize that 60 thousand people have been living in miserable conditions in relief camps for a year. 60 thousand people have become homeless, this is no joke. More than 200 people have died. Despite this situation, the government has remained a mute spectator. The Prime Minister has not spoken a single word till now. Not a single word was spoken in the address as well. The tragedy of a state was ignored, this is surprising.'

'Mary Kom was made an MP by our government'

The Congress MP said, 'You are insulting the soldiers. You are insulting the youth who raise the country's flag on international forums. You are telling Mary Kom, Kunjurani and Mirabai Chanu that you and your state have no meaning in this country. If this did not happen, there would not have been silence in the House and the address.' BJP MP Nishikant Dubey objected to Akoijam's statement and said, 'Mary Kom was made an MP by our government. Manipur was given a sports university. Manipur is in this situation because of Congress.'
