Beijing The first case of humans being infected with bird flu H10N3 strain has been reported in eastern Jiangsu province of China. China's National Health Commission gave this information on Tuesday. State-run CGNT TV reported that the 41-year-old patient from Zhenjiang city is stable and may be discharged from the hospital. The man, a resident of Zhenjiang, was admitted to the hospital on April 28 after showing fever and other symptoms. The man was diagnosed with H10N3 avian influenza virus on 28 May, although he did not provide any information about how the person became infected with the virus.

Health authorities downplayed the infection, saying it was a sporadic case of transmission of the virus from poultry to humans and that the risk of spreading the epidemic was very low. The National Health Commission said in a statement that the patient was found infected with the H10N3 virus on May 28. The commission did not specify how the person got infected. He said that before this case of H10N3 infection in humans has not been reported anywhere in the world.

300 people died in 2016–17. H10N3 is a less severe form of bird flu in chickens and the risk of widespread outbreaks is very low.

Several different types of avian influenza exist in China and some sporadically infect people, usually those who raise poultry. There have been no specific cases of human infection with bird flu since the H7N9 strain killed nearly 300 people during 2016–2017.

There are various forms of bird flu in China, with occasional cases of infecting humans.
