Mallikarjun Kharge: Voting for the Karnataka assembly elections will be held on May 10, but before that the Congress is in trouble. Following the BJP's complaint, the Election Commission on Monday sent a notice to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge. Through this notice, a letter has been issued to clarify Karnataka's "sovereignty" remark allegedly made by senior leader Sonia Gandhi.

The BJP on Monday approached the Election Commission demanding action against Sonia Gandhi and also demanded cancellation of her party's recognition. The party also demanded registration of an FIR against him. Explain that the Election Commission has issued a notice to Kharge to clarify and rectify a social media post referring to the word 'sovereignty' in the context of the state of Karnataka. The Election Commission has said that this is a violation of the oath taken by the political parties.

A BJP delegation led by Union Minister Bhupendra Yadav submitted a memorandum to the Election Commission in Delhi regarding the issue, drawing attention to a tweet from the official Twitter handle of the Indian National Congress on May 6, 2023 at 9:46 pm .."

Congress's tweet read 'Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) President Smt Sonia Gandhi ji sent a big message to 6.5 crore Kannadigas: Congress will not allow anyone to pose a threat to Karnataka's prestige, sovereignty or integrity.'

BJP complained that the above tweet is in violation of the mandatory oath taken by political parties under Section 29A (5) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951. Speaking to reporters, party leader Tarun Chugh, who was part of the delegation besides BJP MP Anil Baluni and leader Om Pathak, cited the Representation of the People Act and said the Congress party should be derecognised.

The Election Commission has given BJP time till 8 pm on May 9, 2023 to send the facts of the claims made in the advertisement. On May 7, 2023, the ECI had issued an advisory.
