Wheat Export / Foreign government at India's doorstep for wheat, five Islamic countries requested

Five Islamic countries, including Indonesia and Bangladesh, one of the world's biggest grain importers, have requested India for wheat supplies after a government ban on wheat exports was imposed last month. The special thing is that these are the countries where there were demonstrations after the Prophet controversy.

Delhi: Five Islamic countries, including Indonesia and Bangladesh, one of the world's biggest grain importers, have requested India for wheat supplies after a government ban on wheat exports was imposed last month. The special thing is that these are the countries where there were demonstrations after the Prophet controversy. According to the report, India has received requests for export of wheat from Indonesia, Bangladesh, Oman, United Arab Emirates and Yemen. The government is evaluating their requirement of wheat and its availability in the domestic market. After this, a decision will be taken on how much wheat will be exported to these countries.

On May 13, while banning exports, India said that it will continue to export wheat to its neighbors and needy countries. Recently, India had approved export of 5 lakh tonnes of wheat to some countries including Indonesia and Bangladesh. Along with this, the central government is in the process of giving approval to export 12 lakh tonnes of wheat.

105 million metric tonnes export target

According to the statement of the Ministry of Commerce, the estimated production of wheat in India for 2022-23 is around 105 Million Metric Tonnes (MMT). For the needs of 130 crore population of the country, 30 million metric tonnes are needed. United Nations food agency Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has estimated that India will export 7 million tonnes in 2022-23.


Wheat supply affected by Russo-Ukraine war

The months-long war between Russia and Ukraine has created a food crisis around the world. Since both the countries are among the largest exporters of wheat. Wheat exports from both countries have been disrupted due to the war. Due to this, countries are feeling the shortage of wheat, which used to import wheat from Russia and Ukraine. According to the IMF, about 30 countries have imposed restrictions on the export of essential goods, including food and fuel, since the Ukraine war broke out.

Indian wheat cheaper than other countries

One of the major reasons behind the demand for Indian wheat is its low prices. According to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Indian wheat is available 40 per cent cheaper than the international price even after the price hike. This is the main reason that after the Russo-Ukraine war, the eyes of the whole world are on India's wheat.

Bangladesh-Indonesia big importers

According to DGCIS, India had exported wheat worth about US$ one billion to Bangladesh in 2021-22. India exported wheat worth about US$ 105 million to Southeast Asia in 2021-22. Apart from this, in 2020 Yemen imported wheat from Russia and Ukraine while UAE imported a significant amount of wheat from Russia.
