India is out of medal contention in the Hockey World Cup. In Sunday's crossover tie, New Zealand beat India 5-4 in the penalty shootout. Earlier, both the teams were tied at 3-3 till the stipulated time. Experienced Lalit Upadhyay scored a field goal for India in the 17th minute. Then in the 24th minute, Sukhjeet doubled the lead for the hosts by converting a penalty corner.

Hockey world cup 2023: India is out of medal contention in the Hockey World Cup. In Sunday's crossover tie, New Zealand beat India 5-4 in the penalty shootout. Earlier, both the teams were tied at 3-3 till the stipulated time. Experienced Lalit Upadhyay scored a field goal for India in the 17th minute. Then in the 24th minute, Sukhjeet doubled the lead for the hosts by converting a penalty corner. A little later, in the 28th minute of the match, Sam Lynn scored a field goal to bring New Zealand back.

After half-time, Varun Kumar converted a penalty corner in the 40th minute to make it 3-0. After that, in the 43rd minute, Ken Russell scored a penalty to make the score 3-2. Then in the 49th minute, Ken Russell scored his second and team's third goal to equalize the score.

Third quarter: One goal each from both the teams

After half-time, India got three penalty corners and New Zealand one, but both the teams could only manage one goal each. In the 40th minute, Varun Kumar scored a penalty to put India ahead 3-1. Three minutes later, Ken Russell converted the penalty to make the score line 3-2 before the fourth quarter.

Second quarter: India's lead doubled, Lalit-Sukhjit scored goals

After a goalless first quarter, the Indian team continued to play aggressively. They also got their breakthrough in the 17th minute when Lalit Upadhyay scored a brilliant field goal. After that, penalty corners were found in the 21st, 23rd and 24th minutes. In the 24th minute, Sukhjeet scored a penalty. Sam Lin scored the goal in the 28th minute to make it 2-1.

Earlier, the Indian team missed a goal in the 21st minute on a penalty corner. It took a while that the goal was scored, but the Kiwi players took the referral and the third umpire converted it into a free hit.

First quarter: Goalless, Manpreet-Nick carded

No goals came in the first 15 minutes. Both the teams kept trying to take the lead. During this, two cards came out from the field referee. In the 7th minute, Kiwi player Nick Wood was given out by the umpire for two minutes. Just 2 minutes after that Indian player Manpreet was shown the green card. India got a penalty corner in the 12th minute of the match, but there was no goal.
