It is associated with the Sengaal Chola dynasty, according to historians, when power was transferred in the Chola dynasty, one outgoing king used to hand over Sengaol to another. It is considered the center of the power of power. The special thing is that when India became independent on the midnight of 14 August 1947, this Sengol was handed over to the first Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru as a sign of independence and transfer of power. What is sengol

Sengol is called scepter in Hindi, it was used in the Chola Empire, when a king of the Chola Empire declared his successor, Sengol was given as a transfer of power. This is a tradition going back to the time of the Chola Empire. Especially in Tamil Nadu and other states of the South, Sengol is considered a symbol of just and fair governance. Some historians say that Sengol was used in Maurya and Gupta dynasty also.

How Sengol was chosen

The country was going to get independence, Lord Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of India was preparing for his last task, this task was to transfer power to India. The paperwork had been completed, but the question was, what would be the symbol of India's independence and transfer of power?

No one had the answer to this question of Lord Mountbatten. In such a situation, Jawaharlal Nehru went to former Governor General C. Raj Gopalachari. Belonging to Tamil Nadu, C Gopalachari understood the historical and cultural importance of India. After a lot of thought, he suggested the name of Sengol to Nehru ji.

Jeweler made

Jawaharlal Nehru liked the suggestion. He entrusted the responsibility to C Rajagopalachari only. After this contacted Thiruvaduthurai, the oldest monastery of Tamil Nadu. The 20th Gurumaha Sannithanam accepted its responsibility. He asked a jeweler to make Sengol. Finally, a golden sengal was prepared, on top of which Nandi was placed. On behalf of the Math, a team was sent to New Delhi in a special plane, so that Sengol could be taken to Lord Mountbatten.

How was that ceremony

Sengol was handed over to Lord Mountbatten at around 11:45 on the night of 14 August. After this Mountbatten handed it over to Saint Srikumaraswamy Thambiran who came from Tamil Nadu. He purified it with holy water. The Thevaram hymns were sung as per the Tamil tradition. At that time maestro TN Rajarathinam played the nadaswaram. Mr. Kumaraswamy Thambiran handed over Sengol to Jawaharlal Nehru at midnight itself by applying Tilak on his forehead, which became the symbol of transfer of power.

Where was sengol till now

According to Home Minister Amit Shah, till now Sengol was in Allahabad Museum. Now there can be no proper place to keep it in the Parliament House. In response to a question, he said that a team did research during the construction of the new Parliament House. During this research done on the instructions of PM Modi, Sengol came to know about which people were not aware. It is an important part of the tradition of our country. It means that the government should run according to justice and policy.
