Manmohan Singh / UN expressed grief over Manmohan Singh's death, prayer meetings were held in Bhutan

Manmohan Singh: The news of the death of former Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has caused deep grief not only in India but also globally. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed deep condolences on his demise. Guterres recalled Singh's contribution to India's economic development, global cooperation and strong partnership with the United Nations.

Guterres' tribute

The statement issued by UN Secretary-General's spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said that Dr. Singh played an important role in India's economic history and strengthening the country's position on the global stage. During his Prime Minister tenure (2004-2014), India not only made economic progress but also established its role as an important partner at the global level.

Guterres recalled India-UN cooperation under Singh's leadership and said that he actively contributed to stability and development on international forums.

Special tribute in Bhutan

Prayer meetings were organized in Bhutan in honor of Dr. Manmohan Singh. Bhutan King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck attended Singh's funeral. The Royal Government of Bhutan mourned by hoisting the national flag at half-mast across the country.

A special prayer meeting was held at the famous Tashichodzong Monastery in Thimpu, in which one thousand butter lamps were lit. It was attended by Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, Indian Ambassador Sudhakar Dalela and members of the royal family.

Special message from Palestine

Dr Manmohan Singh's contribution to Palestine was also deeply remembered. Charge d'Affaires of the Palestine Embassy in India Abed Elrajeg Abu Jazzar praised him, saying he had helped Palestine in providing land for the embassy in Delhi.

During Dr Singh's tenure, he met several times with Palestinian leaders Yasser Arafat and Mahmoud Abbas. "We will always remember his contribution. He maintained a historic relationship with us," Jazzar said.

An inspiration for India and the world

Dr Manmohan Singh's simplicity, erudition and farsightedness established him as an exceptional leader. Under his leadership, India gained strength not only in the economic sector but also in international relations.
