Maharashtra Election: Allegations of EVM data deletion and voter list manipulation in the Maharashtra assembly elections have created a stir in political circles. The opposition alliance I.N.D.I.A has decided to approach the Supreme Court over these allegations. This decision was taken in the alliance meeting held at Sharad Pawar's residence on Tuesday.

Alliance's seriousness and legal preparation

After the meeting, NCP (SP) leader Prashant Jagtap told the media that the alliance will file a petition in the Supreme Court by Friday on the issue of alleged EVM manipulation and irregularities in the voter list. He also said that before this, legal consultation will be taken from senior lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi. Jagtap stressed that these issues raise serious questions on the transparency of the electoral process, and the opposition is raising it with all seriousness.

Allegations on EVM and voter list

The meeting mainly discussed irregularities in EVM and voter list. Prashant Jagtap clarified that this meeting was not on any other political strategy, such as the Congress and AAP alliance in Delhi or handing over the command of the alliance to Mamata Banerjee. This meeting was completely focused on the issues of electoral malpractices. The opposition parties believe that these issues are weakening the roots of democracy and the intervention of the Supreme Court is necessary to resolve them.

Questions raised after election results

After the results of Maharashtra Election 2024, opposition parties had made massive allegations of EVM tampering and flaws in the voter list. The opposition claimed that these irregularities affected the election results and raised questions on the transparent democratic process.

Election Commission statement: Allegations of malpractice baseless

On the other hand, the Maharashtra Election Commission has outright rejected these allegations. The commission completed the mandatory counting of 1440 VVPAT slips in all 288 assembly constituencies on November 23, 2024. Officials confirmed that no irregularities were found in the votes recorded in EVMs and slips recorded against candidates in VVPAT machines. The Election Commission says that the entire process has been fair and transparent.

Opposition's demand: Transparency and fairness

However, the opposition is not satisfied with these claims. They say that the irregularities in EVM data and voter list are widespread and well planned. The alliance will demand a fair investigation from the Supreme Court and ensure transparency in the electoral process.

Way forward

Allegations related to EVM and voter list in Maharashtra elections have become a big issue for the opposition. It remains to be seen what stand the Supreme Court takes on this petition and whether this case will lay the foundation for any significant reform in the electoral process of the country. This move of the opposition alliance I.N.D.I.A is part of the effort to maintain transparency and trust in democracy.
