Congress leader Rahul Gandhi announced that Congress will contest elections in Punjab with the chief minister's face. Since then, the war between Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and Congress Party President Navjot Singh Sidhu over the CM face has intensified. Both the factions have started lobbying rapidly for the leaders and workers of both the factions to propose them before the Delhi Durbar. However, Channi is currently seen ahead of Sidhu in this race for the post of Chief Minister.

That's why Channi is ahead of Sidhu

The most important thing for Channi is that he is in favor of Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi if he sees the results of 2017 assembly elections and 2019 Lok Sabha elections and the math of Dalit vote bank. Channi not only won the assembly elections on his seat but also got the Congress party the maximum votes from his seat in the Lok Sabha elections. With the help of Channi, Congress can reach 32 per cent Dalit vote bank in Punjab. While the Jat Sikh community from which Sidhu belongs, he has only 19 per cent of the vote, in which the Akali Dal is also considered to be dominant.

After assuming the post of CM, Channi took quick decisions in 111 days. Broke the Maharaja image of Capt. The VIP image was also significantly reduced. However, in the last days, his sister-in-law's son Bhupinder Honey was raided by the ED, after which he came under the scanner. BJP and Akali are also constantly surrounding Channi on this issue. Because illegal sand mafia is one of the biggest issues of Punjab. Captain Amarinder Singh is also directly accusing Channi of illegal sand mining. On the contrary, there is no such allegation in Sidhu's political life.

Channi won the election of councilor thrice. Apart from this, he was also the President of Kharar Municipal Council. In 2007, if the Congress party did not give a ticket, the independents won. After this he became MLA from Chamkaur Sahib seat in 2012 and 2017. He got 61 thousand 60 votes. His vote share stood at 42.26 per cent. In 2017, he became the Minister of Technical Education in Captain Amarinder's government. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress candidate from Anandpur Sahib seat got 46.99 percent votes from Chamkaur Sahib. The party won this seat due to Channi's hold and vote bank. Congress's Manish Tewari is an MP from this seat, who often targets Sidhu.

Congress lost where Sidhu campaigned in Lok Sabha

Sidhu joined Congress in 2017 and became MLA from Amritsar East. Sidhu got 67 thousand 865 votes in these elections. In these elections, he got 61.01 percent or more than half of the votes. However, two years later, when the Lok Sabha elections were held, the vote share of this Congress's Lok Sabha candidate remained 53.2 percent. Whereas the vote percentage of the Akali-BJP alliance candidate increased from 17.82 per cent in 2017 to 40.33 per cent. In the Lok Sabha elections, Sidhu was given the responsibility of Bathinda and Gurdaspur. Sidhu campaigned at both the places. Congress lost both the seats.

Earlier, Sidhu won the Lok Sabha elections from Amritsar on a BJP ticket in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections. In 2006, he resigned from the post of MP after being convicted in a culpable homicide case. Then won the 2007 Lok Sabha by-election. Won the 2009 Lok Sabha elections from Amritsar again. But in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, BJP cut his ticket and gave it to Arun Jaitley. Then in 2016 BJP sent Sidhu to Rajya Sabha but he left the membership.

When against his own Sidhu

According to the political experts of Punjab, the reason for removing Captain Amarinder Singh from the CM chair seems to be being made to keep Sidhu away as well. Many leaders like Channi, who revolted against the Captain, Minister Sukhjinder Randhawa, Tript Rajinder Bajwa, MLA Kulbir Zira, were earlier with Sidhu, who took the lead to remove the Captain. But in the meantime, there was a battle for the CM's chair between Randhawa and Sidhu. Then Charanjit Channi became the CM. Since then this group has remained with Channi. Those who are openly advocating to make Channi the CM face. After the departure of the Captain, those close to him in the Congress are also in support of Channi.
