The term of the Haryana Legislative Assembly is ending on November 3, while the term of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly is ending on November 26. The Election Commission also plans to conduct assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir before September 30. This deadline has been fixed by the High Court. The Commission recently visited Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana to take stock of the preparations related to the elections, but it has not yet visited Maharashtra. Often before announcing the election dates, the team of the Commission visits the concerned state and takes stock of the preparations related to the elections there. Therefore, it is believed that the commission can announce the dates for the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir.

After the removal of Article 370, assembly elections will be held in Jammu and Kashmir for the first time. Earlier, the last assembly elections were held in Jammu and Kashmir in the year 2014. According to the commission, conducting elections in the districts of North Kashmir is a big challenge. Many areas here are sensitive.

On August 9, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar visited Jammu and Kashmir with his team. He had said that the commission is committed to conducting elections here as soon as possible. The Supreme Court had directed the Election Commission to conduct assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir by 30 September 2024. The apex court had said that Jammu and Kashmir should be given the status of a state as soon as possible and elections should be held there.

Assembly elections were held in J&K 10 years ago

According to sources, elections can be held in Jammu and Kashmir in five phases. The last assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir were held in five phases in the year 2014. According to the Election Commission, there are many challenges in the districts of North Kashmir. Many areas here are considered sensitive. In North Kashmir, Anantnag, Baramulla, Budgam, Bandipora, Ganderbal, Kupwara, Kulgam, Pulwama, Shopian and Srinagar districts have been considered sensitive, while in South Kashmir, districts like Kathua, Samba, Reasi, Jammu, Udhampur have been considered sensitive.
