Election Commission / Meeting regarding Election Commissioner in PM House, Rahul Gandhi will also attend

Election Commission: Today, i.e. on 17 February 2025, an important meeting is going to be held for the selection of the new Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India. This meeting will be held at 5:30 pm at the Prime Minister's residence (PM House). This meeting will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Law Minister Arjun Meghwal and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi. The purpose of this meeting is to select a qualified candidate for the post of Election Commissioner.

Selection Process and Legal Provisions

Under the Indian Constitution, the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners are appointed by the President. This appointment is made on the basis of the recommendation of the Selection Committee headed by the Prime Minister. The current Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar is retiring on 18 February 2025. He took charge of this post in the year 2022. Under his leadership, the Election Commission successfully conducted the Lok Sabha elections in the year 2024. Apart from this, he also conducted assembly elections in many states including Jammu and Kashmir, Maharashtra, Haryana, Karnataka, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand and Delhi.
