A court on Sunday despatched a senior chief of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) to three-day police remand in reference to a case associated with abetment to suicide. Earlier in the day, Panna Deb was arrested from her house withinside the Indranagar locality here via way of means of the Investigating Officer who has been probing the suicide.

The deceased, a young girl who was reportedly suffering from a mental disease for the beyond 14 years, was a near relative of the TMC chief and was staying in the same house as Ms Deb together along with her mother. The disappearance of the victim’s father a few years in the past is stated to be a mystery.

“The deceased left a ‘suicide note’ wherein she named and blamed Panna Deb for torturing her. She wrote she was compelled to take the acute step due to insufferable torture,” a police officer stated.

Ms Deb, a former Councillor of the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC), was among the first batch of senior leaders from the State who joined the TMC in July last. She is anticipated to be a part of the TMC’s State executive, the contributors of which the party is anticipated to declare soon.

Subal Bhowmik, who quit the Congress to sign up for TMC, alleged they were “going through all-spherical assaults withinside the State” and Panna Deb’s arrest was “planned and politically motivated”. Leaders of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party refused to comment on the issue as it was related to the law.
