Sri Vijaya Puram / Port Blair's name changed, Home Minister Amit Shah announced

The central government has decided to rename Port Blair, the capital of Andaman and Nicobar, as 'Sri Vijayapuram'. Sri Vijaya Puram: The central government has taken an important decision to rename Port Blair, the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. From now on, the city will be known as 'Shri Vijayapuram'. The change has been announced by Home Minister Amit Shah, who shared information in this regard on the social media platform X.

Home Minister Amit Shah wrote, "Inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's resolve to free the country from all symbols of slavery, today the Ministry of Home Affairs has decided to rename Port Blair as 'Shri Vijayapuram'. The name 'Shri Vijayapuram' reflects our freedom struggle and the contribution of Andaman and Nicobar in it." This announcement has been described as an important step towards re-establishing the symbols and historical heritage of the freedom struggle.

Symbol of freedom struggle

Amit Shah further wrote, "This island has a unique place in the independence and history of our country. This island, which played the role of a naval base in the Chola Empire, is today ready to accelerate the security and development of the country." Port Blair, which will now be called 'Shri Vijayapuram', has a history deeply linked to the freedom struggle.

Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and freedom fighters connection

The Home Minister specifically mentioned that the island was the place where Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose first hoisted the tricolour. Along with this, the sagas of the struggle for the independence of Maa Bharati were also written here by Veer Savarkar and other freedom fighters in the Cellular Jail.
